ATEC Undergraduate Timeline

This timeline provides a list of tasks that students in ATEC typically complete as they progress through the ATEC program.  This timeline should help new students anticipate important procedures and deadlines to help aid in academic success.  This is not a comprehensive list.  Please email ATECAdvising at utdallas.edu or contact your assigned academic advisor with questions.

Freshman Year

Fall Semester

Late August Fall semester begins
  Get acclimated to UTD and ATEC
  Get familiar with the Academic Calendar and important deadlines
  Get into the habit of checking UTD emails at least once a day
  Submit final college transcripts for Dual Credit
  Submit official score reports for credit by examination (AP/IB/CLEP)
Late October Receive copy of personalized ATEC Design & Production degree plan (check email for digital copy)
 

Attend Freshman Group Advising ATEC with Academic Advisors

(Advisors visit all Freshman Seminar classes to assist with preparation for spring semester registration.  Attendance is required.)

  Check holds prior to registration
Early November

Accept pending AP/IB/CLEP credits

(Email advisor - "I wish to accept the following AP credits:___" or "I wish to accept all IB credits")

  Register on your own for the spring semester
December

End of Semester

Spring Semester

January Spring semester begins
Late January

Attend Pathway/Concentration Info Session

(Students interested in applying for an application-based pathway/concentration during their third semester should attend the Info Session during their second semester.)

February

Complete Pathway/Concentration Check-In

(This is not an official pathway/concentration application.  This is an opportunity to declare your pathway/concentration of interest.  The check-in helps students determine which courses to take in the fall and assists them in preparation for the pathway/concentration application.  To initiate the audit, advisors will send check-in surveys to students' UTD emails.  Completion of the check-in survey is required prior to registration for next semester.  A registration hold will be placed on students' records entitled "45 Hour Degree Audit Required.")

Plan schedule for fall registration

(Set up an appointment in with an advising peer mentor or academic advisor in early March for assistance with course planning.)

Mid-March

Fall and summer schedules available

(Summer enrollment is optional)

Late March Check holds prior to registration
April

Registration for fall and summer classes begins

(Use Track Map as a guide to select courses from your desired pathway/concentration.  Summer enrollment it optional.)

May End of semester
 

Summer Break

(If interested in an application-based pathway/concentration, use the summer break to prepare for the fall pathway/concentration application.)

 

Sophomore Year

Fall Semester

August Fall semester begins
September

Attend Pathway/Concentration Info Session

(Students interested in applying for an application-based pathway/concentration during their fourth semester should attend the Info Session in their third semester.)

 

Apply for pathway/concentration

(Animation, Critical Media Studies, and Games pathways/concentrations only.  Application not required for Design & Production.  New freshman may decide to apply in their third or fourth semester.  Consult with your advisor for more details.)

October Consider applying for Application-Based and Special Topics courses

Junior Year

Third to last semester

Complete Pre-Capstone Check-In to prepare for Capstone

(This is not the Capstone Proposal.  This is an opportunity to learn more about the Capstone process.  To initiate the audit, advisors will send check-in surveys to students' UTD emails.  Completion of the check-in survey is required prior to registration for next semester.  A registration hold will be placed on students' records entitled "See Advisor for Degree Audit.")

  Attend Capstone Celebration
  Start brainstorming Capstone ideas
March Consider applying for Application-Based and Special Topics courses
October Consider applying for Application-Based and Special Topics courses
 

Senior Year

Second to Last Semester Submit Capstone Proposal
  Complete Graduation Audit
  Apply for graduation
Final Semester

Complete Capstone Project

(Must be completed in final Spring or Fall semester)

 

Additional Tasks

These tasks have no set deadline.  They should be done throughout your time at UTD.

Beginning of Program Consider on-campus jobs by searching Handshake student job board
 

Get involved on campus

Get to know your professors

  • Visit them during their office hours
  • Ask questions about the industry
  • Seek feedback on course assignments
  • Talk about career goals
  • Ask about their professional experience 
Middle of Program Create professional portfolio/demo reel
  Take opportunities to collaborate with peers on special projects
  Keep track of degree plan progress
  Visit UTD Career Center & draft resume
  Consider opportunities such as internships, research, study abroad, & independent studies
  Connect with 3 professors who could serve as references
  Finalize internships, research, employment, or graduate school plans
End of Program

Visit UTD Career Center and finalize resume

  Make sure professional portfolio/demo reel is ready to show to potential employers
