Critical Media Studies Concentration


Application no longer required! Students interested in declaring Critical Media Studies as a concentration must meet the criteria below and contact their assigned academic advisor:

  • Grade of “B” or higher in:
    • ATCM 2300 Introduction to Technoculture AND in one of the following:
      •  ATCM 2320 Critical Media Research Foundations or
      •  ATCM 2321 Reading Media Critically or
      •  ATCM 2322 Media History


If above requirements are met, proceed to completing the Concentration Declaration Form: https://bit.ly/ATECConcentrationDeclaration.

If above criteria is not met, the following can be submitted for faculty review:

  • Statement of Purpose: In 200-300 words, explain why you are interested in CMS. Tell us about your interests and academic goals. Writing should be clear and gramatically correct, as well as informative.
  • Paper: Choose one paper from those you wrote in ATCM 2320 Critical Media Research Foundations. If you have not taken this class, you may submit a 300-500-word paper from another foundations or fundamentals course that analyzes the larger social, political, economic, or material concerns of a media object.
  • Favorite meme or .gif
  • Optional: Work sample or link to any additional work that you would like to include for consideration of your application.
