Students interested in pursuing internships should work with the UT Dallas Career Center to find internships, prepare for interviews, etc.  Students can work with the Career Center to determine internship eligibility for credit or transcript notation.  Each school is assigned a Career Consultant who can help navigate the career and internship search process.  Appointments with the Career Center can be made by calling 972-883-2943 or through handshake on their website, www.utdallas.edu/career.  The Career Center is located in the Student Services Building 3.300.

Internships as Credit in ATEC

ATEC students may enroll in ISAE 4V50 for 1 - 3 hours of course credit per semester that they are employed in an internship.   This course is a credit/no-credit course.  ATEC students may earn a total of 6 hours of credit for ISAE 4V50.  Internships are not required in the School of Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication.  All internship credit counts as an upper-level free-elective and cannot be used for prescribed elective or major requirement credit.  If you have further questions on how this will count on your degree plan, please contact your advisor.

Eligibility

To be eligible for internship credit, undergraduate students must

  • have completed 24 hours of college-level coursework before the internship semester.
  • have completed 12 hours at UT Dallas before the internship semester.
  • have at least a 2.5 GPA or prior authorization.

The internship must:

  • enhance student learning and development.
  • last at least 6 weeks from the time of enrollment in the course.

Course Enrollment Equivalency

The amount of hours that you may earn for your internship is determined by the total work hours of the entire internship.  This is the maximum hours that you may receive for the semester.  However, a student may choose to enroll in less hours than the maximum.

3 credit hours 240+ work hours
2 credit hours  160+ work hours
1 credit hour 80+ work hours

Tuition, based on the enrolled credit hours, and fees associated with the internship course will be assessed.

Note:
International (F1) students must be enrolled in at least 1 semester credit hour in each internship semester per CPT guidelines.

How to Enroll

The Career Center must approve your internship to receive academic credit. To submit a request, please follow the steps below.

  1. Request an experience (internship) in Handshake and select the experience type labeled "ATEC Experience Request".
  2. Complete the form and supplemental questions.
  3. Upload your offer letter, job description, and release and indemnification form.

If approved by a Career Consultant, you will be notified via Handshake.  At that time, the Career Consultant will work with you and your academic advisor to complete course enrollment.  Be sure to keep an eye on your email after approval as the ATEC Undergraduate Advising Office may need additional information from you to complete your enrollment in ISAE 4V50.
