How to Register

There are two main methods used to plan and register for courses at UTD: Schedule Planner and CourseBook. This downloadable guide takes you step-by-step through each method plus bonus tips from your Advising Peer Mentors!

The guide will also show you how to check your holds and Enrollment Appointment prior to the beginning of registration.

Submitting Registration Requests

To submit a registration request, e-mail ATECadvising@utdallas.edu for assistance. Be sure to include "Registration" in the subject line. In the body of the email, include the:

  • 5-digit Class Number (ex: 81234)

  • Course Prefix (ex: ATCM)

  • Course Number (ex: 2301)

  • Section Number (ex: 001)

An advisor is assigned daily to answer and process these requests, and they are answered in the order they are received. Emailing your assigned advisor a registration request will not get the request processed faster; the advisor on the registration shift will be able to more quickly process your request. You will receive an email confirmation from ATECadvising@utdallas.edu

It is the student's responsibility to check that the correct course was added to their schedule and to follow up with their assigned advisor to confirm that the course is appropriate for their degree plan and graduation requirements.

Enrollment Appointment

Each student at UTD is assigned a specific date and time when they are eligible to register for the upcoming semesters.  This is called an enrollment appointment. The enrollment appointment is not a literal appointment. Students are not required to report to a specific place at the time of the appointment to register. Instead, the enrollment appointment specifies when the student can begin registering for the upcoming semester by logging into the Orion Student Center.  

Enrollment appointments are assigned 2 weeks prior to the beginning of registration for spring and fall semesters. The date on which enrollment appointments are assigned can be found on the Academic Calendar for the upcoming semester.

Enrollment appointments are not assigned for summer registration; all students become eligible to enroll for summer courses on the same day, as is listed on the Academic Calendar for the upcoming summer term.

The date classes are viewable for the upcoming semester is also listed on the Academic Calendar as "Schedule Planner Available." From this date, students have 2 weeks to plan their schedules before the registration period begins. During this time, no students are eligible to register for classes.


When registering for courses, students have the option of adding themselves to waitlists for classes that are full. Not every full course will have a waitlist option. Waitlist availability can best be determined by going to the "Enroll" feature in Orion Student Center. The following symbols are used to depict the availability of courses: 

  • Green Circle - Open Courses - These are courses with available seats. As long as you meet the prerequisite and/or co-requisite, you are eligible to register for any open course.  
  • Blue Square - Closed Courses - These are courses that are full and either (1) have a full waitlist or (2) do not have a waitlist.
  • Yellow Triangle - Waitlist Courses - These courses are full but have at least one seat available on the waitlist.

Once you are added to a waitlist, you will receive a weekly update of your waitlist position number through email.

Enrollment from a waitlist will not occur under the following circumstances: 

  • Course Conflict** - You will never be enrolled from a waitlist when you are registered for a course at the same time.  
  • Holds - Registration holds will prevent you from being enrolled from a waitlist. 
  • Max Hours** - Students are unable to register for more than 19 credit hours (increased from 18 hours starting Fall 2021) in the Fall and Spring and 15 credit hours in the Summer. Therefore, the waitlist will not enroll you for a course that will place you above the maximum permitted hours. 
  • Duplicate Course** - You will never be enrolled from a waitlist when you are registered for a different section of the same course. For example, if you enroll in section 001 of ATCM 2301, and waitlist for your preferred section at a different time, you will not be enrolled from the waitlist.

**Students who have a course conflict, have reached or will reach the max hours, or who are attempting to waitlist for a duplicate course can set up their waitlist to swap from an enrolled course. Step-by-step instructions for using the waitlist swap feature in Orion can be found here.
